SUNDAYS AT WORSHIP
“March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” Or is it “comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lion?” Whichever is correct isn’t it interesting that both are used as symbols for Christ? Lamb of God, Lion of Judah…he is as gentle, or as fierce, as we need when we need. During this month when we begin the season of Lent we will explore the images of Christ that we celebrate.
MARCH 6 LAST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
In cities and small towns all around the world, people are celebrating a Mardi Gras or carnival. They are “getting their sinning out of the way” before the onset of the Lenten season. As we come to the end of the season of Epiphany, we will consider whether the revelations from God end as well. The Noteworthy Bells will play this Sunday.
MARCH 13 FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT
Jesus doesn’t say anywhere that he is the “Lion of Judah” but it is one of the ways he is described. When we consider the twelve sons of Jacob/Israel, we know the story of Joseph best, and we often think that is the line from which Jesus is descended. But it is Judah, one of the lesser known. What does his story tell us about the one who was to come? What is it the family of Jesus that we need to know?
MARCH 20 SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT
Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches.” We often use this verse in conjunction with communion, but we often forget that sometimes branches are pruned when they are not growing and serving the purpose for which they exist. How are we serving Jesus? Are we in need of pruning? And if we have been pruned already, cut back so that we can come back stronger, what have we learned?
MARCH 27 THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” We are in Daylight Savings Time again. More light for each day. More hours of sunlight. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus told us not to hide our light under a basket. What do we do with the light we have? Do we use it to its full potential? Are we shining our light for God’s purposes?
